Chatting about Semester 2

This week's topic is IM. I've been IM'ing for a long time with friends, so long in fact that my friends and I often lament picking our screen names at age 13 and wishing we could change them now without having to inform everybody. Chatting lots definitely worked to my advantage last semester when doing a library school practicum performing chat reference for undergraduates. It's not uncommon to have multiple windows open when chatting and it seems like that's the toughest thing to get used to when people first start using IM. It was fun to be able to get experience with chat reference and I felt like it was a great service for the UW to be offering since lots of students used it. As for chatting in my own life, Gmail has a chat built right into it and they recently made it so you can sign in to AOL IM as well as Google Talk right in Gmail. That has made it so I hardly use AOL IM or meebo anymore since I can do it all in one site. Very handy.

Ugh, I feel old!! I remember when I was 13 and the new technology was the Apple IIC!

It's interesting to think about how the perception of technology among library staff will change as people who grew up with these technologies start becoming the staff....

Thanks for making me think!

yeah, when I was 13 I was learning how to program my name in DOS so that it would run across the entire screen in a lame pattern.

Can you give us examples of silly kid names? (You don't have to share yours.) What would kids today use? luvszacefron? mileycyrusrx? My 17-yr-old niece has barbieprincess. She still likes that, thinks it is cute, but once she is done with college, I could see where it would be embarrassing.

Hey Pinky,

Pinky and Stef - Sorry for the long reply time, first week of school means I'm not at work as much. Some of our silly screen names include ones created in the 90s when "gurrrl" was a popular term, some silly nicknames we haven't used since we were kids or my screen name which still ends in the number 14...which is how old I was when I created it.
